10 Women Making the Films and TV Shows of Tomorrow

Since Greta Gerwig became the fifth woman ever nominated for the best director Oscar earlier in 2018, female directors have been a talking point.

But they’re still sorely underrepresented: only 11% of the directors of the top 250 films in 2017 were female. Despite their dismal representation at the top, women are creating some of the most compelling film and TV out there.

In her new book Stealing the Show: How Women Are Revolutionizing Television, writer Joy Press argues that women are not only leading the “golden age” of television, they’re revolutionizing it, by showing us things we’ve historically been deprived of onscreen.

The revolution isn’t only being televised; the silver screen is also being revamped by radical ladies, both new faces and those we know from in front of the camera.

I compiled a list of 10 inspiring young women who are creating magic behind the scenes in film and TV. It includes Marsai Martin, Millie Bobby Brown, Lena Waithe, Olivia Milch, Crystal Moselle, Desiree Akhavan, Lucia Aniello, Quinn Shepherd, Sydney Freeland and Hannah Marks.
