I'd been noticing a gender discrepancy in cafes throughout Melbourne since moving to the city three years ago. So often I'd see only men behind the coffee machines and women serving.

 

After doing research and talking to some baristas I found there is also a severe gender gap in the international barista championships.

 

I realised that this was a problem worth discussing in a broader context, so I wrote this piece for The Guardian Australia. 

 

It features significant research and interviews with leading baristas, including a cafe owner and former board member for the World Barista Championship.
